"As a rural physician, I truly practice comprehensive and continuing care."

The Annapolis Family Medical Group is located in beautiful western Nova Scotia and services the town of Annapolis Royal and the surrounding region. Our population base is 12,000 to 14,000 people. We currently employ two full-time physicians and three part-time physicians, a nurse practitioner, an office nurse and support staff. The pace is busy and challenging.

As generalists, we provide service across the range of pediatric, adult and geriatric medicine. As a multi-disciplinary team, we manage trauma, acute urgent and emergency care, and the full spectrum of chronic conditions including cardiac, respiratory and diabetic care, as well as dealing with the usual range of intercurrent illnesses, prenatal and well-baby care, minor surgical procedures and primary prevention.

On-call rotations are approximately one day a week and one weekend a month. Calls can be taken from home.

Our spacious and newly remodeled offices are located inside the Annapolis Community Health Centre, which offers the following services:

  • 24/7 laboratory service
  • 24/7 basic diagnostic imaging with digital PACS, and easy access to radiology consultation.
  • Cardiac investigation services, including ECG, Holter and event monitoring. New telemetry is about to be installed.
  • Inpatient beds, plus palliative care beds
  • Rehabilitation services, including physiotherapy, and occupational therapy
  • A Diabetes Centre, with a full-time dietitian and part-time Diabetes Nurse Educator.
  • Mental Health Services, with regular visits by a psychiatrist and psychologist in addition to the regular therapists.
  • Public Health nurse, whose office shares our waiting room.
  • Continuing Care office (home care and assessments for long-term care placement) in the building.

Each morning, the clinicians, other clinical service providers, and site manager meet for a sit-down rounds to discuss the inpatients, cases seen in ER/OPD the previous day whose care may benefit from interprofessional discussion or referral, and patients in the community who may present in crisis in the ER/OPD.

We also have excellent relations with our specialist colleagues in the District, who recognize the quality of the service we provide, and are always ready to provide telephone consultation or accept urgent transfers.  Many of them come down for clinic days, so our non-urgent patients can see general surgery, internal medicine, urology, and obstetrics/gynecology right in our office.

We are seeking like-minded, team-oriented physicians, who appreciate the opportunity to employ a broad range of skills in a cheerful, friendly and culturally vibrant rural setting.
